Baidu Telematics strikes new cooperation deals with automakers.

We are pleased to announce that at CES, the International Consumer Electronics Show held annually in Las Vegas, Nevada, Baidu unveiled plans to cooperate this year with some of the world’s leading automakers, offering its telematics solutions to auto brands including Audi, General Motors, and FAW-Volkswagen to make their China models smarter.

Baidu CarLife, a smartphone integration application for connected cars, will be available on future models including the Audi A3, A4, Q5 and Q7, and Cadillac’s XTS and SRX series, providing a range of Baidu services including free voice-based navigation, music streaming, phone calls and texting, and support for third-party apps. CarLife is compatible with both Android and iOS smartphones and can be connected to an in-car system (Linux, QNX or Android) by Wi-Fi or USB. Launched in January 2015, Baidu CarLife has already been working with BMW, Mercedes Benz, Ford, and China’s BYD. A new Hyundai Tucson, the first car on the market to integrate with CarLife, was launched in September 2015.

China’s private car ownership is expected to reach 160 million in 2016, and Baidu is utilizing its advantages in technology to connect people with in-car service to meet fast-changing demand. With its leading mapping technologies, Baidu has the potential to shape the future of the telematics industry. Integral to Baidu’s plans in telematics this will be HD (high-definition) Maps-as-a-Service, or HaaS. Baidu has been working on HD maps since 2013 and is the only high-definition mapping service provider in China. Baidu predicts that the next two to five years will see HD maps become the mainstream in mapping services, and HD maps will serve as the fundamental component for Baidu’s telematics efforts, with part of the high-definition data for autonomous driving and infrastructures for general maps and navigation.

HaaS will enable real time online updates that will transmit important information on traffic and road conditions, so that the HD maps will “learn” as more HaaS-enabled vehicles travel the roads. Besides CarLife, Baidu has been working on other telematics solutions under the rubric of HaaS to meet the increasing demands for smart auto, including a data analysis and auto cloud service called “MyCar,” a voice-enabled digital assistant called “CoDriver,” and a telematics security system called CarGuard.

Baidu’s CarLife, MyCar, CoDriver and CarGuard are the company’s major Internet of Vehicles solutions, and Baidu plans to expand into derivative auto services including auto insurance, car repairs and washes, and gas refills.

MyCar collects car data and the driver’s driving and navigation history, analyzes them through the cloud, and gives drivers notifications for needed vehicle maintenance and optimizes driving routes. MyCar has been incorporated with the latest BYD Song SUV launched in October last year.

By leveraging Baidu’s speech recognition and semantic parsing capabilities, CoDriver acts as a digital assistant that can be activated by users’ voice commands for making calls, playing music, searching for nearby gas stations or checking on road conditions ahead. Baidu’s speech and telematics teams are now working with Tesla, providing its speech recognition API to power Tesla’s China models with in-car voice-enabled features like navigation, SMS, voice-commanded infotainment system, etc.

Backed by its advanced, market leading maps, AI technologies and big data analytics capabilities, Baidu started development of its telematics systems in 2013. The company’s flagship Baidu Maps has over 70% market share in China with over 300 million monthly active users, about a third of whom are car owners, and receives more than 23 billion positioning requests on a daily basis.
